5 Surprising Things That Could Be Attracting Termites to Your Home

As the seasons change and the snow starts to melt away, it’s the perfect time to walk your property and look for signs of weather damage. But what about hidden damage from pests—especially termites?

In honor of Termite Awareness Week (March 7–13), we’re sharing five common ways termites may be getting too comfortable around your home. With a few smart adjustments, you can stay one step ahead of these destructive pests this spring.

Did you know? Every year, termites cause damage to about 600,000 homes in the U.S., costing homeowners over $5 billion in repairs. These “silent destroyers” work quietly but quickly—especially in warm, moist environments—and large colonies can include up to 2 million termites. That’s why a little prevention now can go a long way later.

Easy Ways to Protect Your Home from Termites

Rose Pest Solutions and the NPMA (National Pest Management Association) remind homeowners that they can reduce their chances of falling victim to termite damage by minding the following trouble areas:

1. Storing firewood too close to the house: Termites love wood—especially if it’s dry and stacked near your home. Store firewood at least 20 feet away from your home and five feet off the ground to keep it out of easy reach.

2. Clogged gutters and poor drainage: Moisture is one of the biggest termite magnets. If your gutters are full of leaves or your downspouts are draining too close to your foundation, that damp environment becomes an open invitation. Clear out debris and consider using downspout extenders to direct water away from the house.

3. Overusing mulch: Mulch looks great in garden beds, but it can also hold moisture and act as a food source for termites. Try to keep mulch at least 15 inches away from your foundation and use it sparingly near the house.

4. Trees that are too close to the roofline: Tree branches that touch your house can act like highways for termites and other pests. Keep limbs trimmed and clear of your siding and roof to avoid giving them easy access.

5. Leftover logs or stumps in the yard: Old wood, especially if it’s rotting, is like an all-you-can-eat buffet for termites. If you have any tree stumps, fallen branches, or wood debris, it’s time to clear them out.
