Spring Cleaning Helps Your Community
Even though March 20th was the official first day of spring, we are still waiting for this cold weather to break. Just because it doesn’t feel like spring outside doesn’t mean we can’t start our usual spring activities inside. And nothing says Spring like some good ol’ spring cleaning!
In between rainy day movies, pick a closet or a cupboard and go through it. Clean it out. Make a clothing donation pile, toss any spices or pantry items that may be expired, and if you find any children’s books up to grade 6 reading levels, WE WILL TAKE THEM! This blog will provide you with some great resources to jumpstart spring, pest-proof your home, and give back to your community.
Children’s Book Donations
Rose Pest Solutions has a wonderful relationship with Bernie’s Book Bank in Lake Bluff, IL. Bernie’s Book Bank facilitates the collection, processing and redistribution of new and gently used children’s books to significantly increase book ownership among at-risk infants, toddlers and school-age children throughout Chicagoland.
Rose’s Chicago, Lombard, Northfield, and Wheeling locations are all official Bernie’s Book Donation Drop off locations. So as you’re spring-cleaning, if you come across children’s books, please remember us! We’d love to see you. 🙂
Throughout the year, Rose teams up with Bernie’s Book Bank to support this mission. Together with the Chicago Wolves, Northwestern University, numerous museum partners, and schools throughout Chicagoland, Rose hosts book drives and reading programs for thousands of students.

Spring Cleaning and Pest-Proofing
While you’re already scouring the house for items that are no longer needed, be proactive and pest-proof at the same time. (This wouldn’t be a pest management company’s blog if we didn’t mention pests!) While deep cleaning, inspect the quality of your window screens, while getting rid of empty containers under the sinks, check to make sure the pipes aren’t leaking. Holes in screens and pooling water are huge welcome signs to pests just as stinkbugs, ants, Asian beetles and other seasonal pests. Below are some additional tips to make sure your home is ready to welcome spring without pests.
- Seal up cracks and small openings along the foundation of the house.
- Clean out clogged gutters and downspouts to ensure they are properly functioning.
- Repair loose mortar and replace worn weather-stripping around all windows and doors.
- Screen window and doors.
- Cut back tree branches and other plants from the house.
- Keep kitchens clean by wiping down counters, sinks, floors and shelves.
- Store food in airtight containers clean and sealed, both indoors and outdoors.
- Empty the garbage frequently.
- Eliminate sources of moisture or standing water from leaky pipes or faucets.
