German Cockroach

Our remedy for German Cockroach control

First, contact us. Cockroaches pose serious health risks to your family or business. Controlling German cockroaches takes expertise and persistence due to their rapid reproductive rate. At least 95% of the populations must be eliminated during initial treatment or they will return. Baits are a particularly effective form of roach control for this species, but correct placement in cracks and crevices near harborages is critical.

How to Identify a German Cockroach

Appearance

German cockroaches are about 1/2-inch in size and a light brown color all over. They have two long antennae and six long, spiny legs for running. Adult German cockroaches have wings, but they can’t fly. They have two dark lines on their pronotum, a shield-like body part that partially covers their head. Adult cockroaches have two sensory organs on their back end called cerci. These sensitive organs are what allow them to quickly scurry away from danger (they can even sense tiny differences in airflow). German cockroaches do not go through full metamorphosis (like a butterfly does), so immature cockroaches (called nymphs) look like smaller, wingless versions of adults. Immature German cockroaches are teeny tiny and dark brown. These cockroaches are often found in groups of both adults and nymphs.

Habitat

German cockroaches are found throughout structures but prefer warm and humid places. Roach control should focus on bathrooms and the kitchen, two places frequented by this pest. It spends about 80% of its time resting in cracks and voids near a source of food and/or water. These cockroaches most commonly enter buildings via paper products or packaging such as grocery bags, cardboard boxes and drink cartons.

Diet

Scavenger; eats almost anything, including such things as soap, glue and toothpaste.

German Cockroach FAQ

What Do German Cockroaches Eat?

German Cockroach are scavengers that will feed on almost anything they can find indoors. Common food sources include crumbs, grease, spilled food, pet food, garbage, and even items like toothpaste, soap, or cardboard glue. Even small amounts of leftover food or moisture can support a growing infestation. Keeping kitchens, pantries, and dining areas clean can help reduce the risk of attracting cockroaches.

Can German Cockroaches Fly?

Although German cockroaches have wings, they are not strong fliers. Most often, they move by running quickly across floors, walls, countertops, and cabinets. In some cases, they may glide short distances when disturbed, but flying inside the home is uncommon.

How Do German Cockroaches Spread?

German cockroaches commonly spread through human activity and shared structures. They can be transported inside grocery bags, cardboard boxes, secondhand furniture, appliances, and deliveries. In apartments, condos, and multi-unit buildings throughout the Chicago area, they can also move through walls, plumbing voids, and shared utility spaces. Early detection and professional treatment are important for preventing infestations from spreading.

Do German Cockroaches Bite?

Cockroach bites are uncommon, but they can happen in severe infestations when populations become extremely large and food sources are limited. Most reported bites involve areas such as fingertips, nails, or callused skin. While rare, the presence of cockroaches indoors should always be addressed promptly.

Can Cockroaches Trigger Allergies?

Yes. Cockroach allergens can come from saliva, droppings, shed skin, and egg casings. These allergens may contribute to allergy symptoms and asthma flare-ups, especially in children and individuals with respiratory sensitivities. Reducing indoor cockroach activity can help improve overall indoor environmental conditions.

What Health Risks Are Associated With German Cockroaches?

German cockroaches can spread bacteria and other contaminants as they travel across food preparation areas, dishes, countertops, and stored food. Exposure to contaminated surfaces may contribute to illnesses such as food poisoning and gastrointestinal issues. Professional cockroach control combined with sanitation and exclusion efforts can help reduce these risks.

How Can I Help Keep Cockroaches Out of My Home?

Preventing cockroaches starts with reducing access to food, water, and shelter. Helpful prevention tips include:

  • Cleaning food spills and crumbs promptly
  • Storing food in sealed containers
  • Taking out trash regularly
  • Repairing plumbing leaks and moisture issues
  • Sealing cracks, gaps, and entry points around the home
  • Reducing clutter in storage areas

Professional inspections and ongoing pest management services can also help protect homes from recurring infestations.

What Attracts German Cockroaches Indoors?

German cockroaches are attracted to warm, humid environments where food and moisture are easily available. Kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, basements, and utility areas are among the most common hotspots. Leaky pipes, standing water, clutter, and accessible food sources can all make a home more appealing to cockroaches.

How Do I Know If I Have a German Cockroach Infestation?

Some of the most common signs of a German cockroach infestation include:

  • Seeing cockroaches, especially at night
  • Small dark droppings that resemble ground pepper or coffee grounds
  • A strong, musty odor in affected areas
  • Egg capsules hidden near cabinets, appliances, or cracks
  • Smear marks along walls or baseboards in severe infestations

Because German cockroaches reproduce quickly, early treatment is important before populations become more difficult to control.
