Why Are There So Many Mosquitoes?
An adult female mosquito can lay 50-200 eggs at a time, making them prolific reproducers. They lay their eggs in stagnant and shallow water, such as birdbaths, puddles, buckets, and even pooled water on tarps. A tablespoon of water is all the eggs need to hatch and grow into adult mosquitoes. If not professionally addressed, their population can rapidly grow, quickly overwhelming your outdoor spaces. Mosquitoes are more than just a nuisance. They are known to carry a wide range of diseases, including Triple-E, Zika, and West Nile. Controlling the mosquito population can dramatically enhance your ability to enjoy the outside while preventing the spread of diseases.

What Attracts Mosquitoes to Your Yard?
Mosquitoes are drawn to properties that offer the essentials they need to survive: moisture, shelter, and easy access to people and pets. Even a well-maintained yard can provide hidden breeding sites, especially during warm Midwest weather.
Conditions that commonly support mosquito activity include:
- Birdbaths, buckets, kids’ toys, planters, gardening equipment, wheelbarrows or other items that collect rainwater
- Thick shrubs, dense landscaping, and shaded outdoor spaces where mosquitoes rest during the day
- Gutters that aren’t draining properly
- Low spots in the yard where water lingers after rainfall
- Neglected outdoor areas with excess debris or unmanaged growth
Because mosquitoes can develop rapidly from egg to biting adult, populations can grow fast if breeding sites are left untreated.
Rose Pest Solutions’ professional mosquito services are designed to identify high-risk areas, reduce active mosquito populations, and help you reclaim your outdoor spaces with family, pet, and pollinator-conscious treatment solutions.
What Are Some Common Health Concerns Associated With Mosquitoes?
Mosquitoes are known carriers of diseases that can impact both people and animals. Older adults, young children, and pets are often more vulnerable to mosquito-borne illnesses. That is why prevention is so important, especially during peak mosquito season. Some of the most common mosquito-borne health concerns include:
- West Nile virus
- La Crosse encephalitis
- Heartworm (in pets)
- Eastern equine encephalitis
- St. Louis encephalitis
- Jamestown Canyon virus
Scratching mosquito bites, especially among children, can damage skin and lead to secondary infections.

Types of Mosquitoes in the Midwest
Not all mosquitoes behave the same way. Some bite during the day, while others are most active at dawn and dusk.
Common mosquitoes in the Midwest include:
Culex mosquitoes
Often found near standing water and active at night. Known carriers of West Nile virus. Culex larvae, also called wigglers, breathe through tubes while resting at an angle on the surface of water. Culex mosquitoes are often found in homes and will readily bite people and pets indoors.
Aedes mosquitoes
Aggressive daytime biters commonly found in containers and small water sources. Known carriers of Dengue, Chikungunya, Zika, and Yellow Fever. Aedes larvae, or wigglers, also rest at an angle on the surface of water while breathing oxygen through a tube.
Anopheles mosquitoes
Typically active at dusk and associated with marshy or wooded areas. Known carriers of human Malaria. Anopheles mosquito larvae rest parallel to the surface of water.

Mosquito Treatment FAQs
Will the Mosquito Treatment Harm the Butterflies in My Yard?
No. Our goal is to preserve the natural insect life beneficial to your garden, including pollinators like butterflies. We use a mosquito treatment designed to affect mosquitoes, and our application process targets mosquito resting and breeding zones.
Will It Kill Fleas and Ticks in the Lawn Too?
The product we use for our mosquito treatments is also labeled to work on ticks. However, the mosquito service targets dense vegetation and breeding areas, and is not a broadcast lawn application. Speak with your veterinarian about keeping your pets on preventative medication.
Is Mosquito Treatment Dangerous for My Dog?
We recommend waiting at least one hour before allowing your dog outside after treatment to allow products to dry.
How Long Does Each Application Take?
How long the application process takes depends on the size of your yard. However, our technicians will typically finish an application in about 30 minutes to an hour. During this time, we recommend you, your dog, and family members stay indoors.

We’re licensed, trained, and certified by the Departments of Public Health and Agriculture, using safe, EPA-regulated materials, always.
