Invasive Species a Hindrance During Summer Months

Rose Pest Solutions Chicago encourages public awareness about insects of foreign origin

Invasive species, or insects of foreign origin, can cause major issues for American homeowners during the summer months. Rose Pest Control Chicago urges vigilance against invasive species including red imported fire ants (RIFAs), Asian tiger mosquitoes, brown marmorated stink bugs and Formosan termites as the weather continues to warm.

Summer Pest Threats

“Most people are aware of the risks posed by common summer pests like ticks, mosquitoes and bees. However, invasive species can also cause property damage and, in some cases, injury to humans,” said Rich Smith, Director of Pest Control Services, Rose Pest Control Lombard IL.

Experts at the National Pest Management Association (NPMA), a nonprofit organization committed to the protection of public health, food and property from household pests, encourage homeowners to also be on the lookout for the following invasive species this summer:

Red Imported Fire Ant (RIFA)

RIFAs were brought to the United States in 1930 from South America and are mainly found in the southern region of the country. When disturbed, they are known to swarm and sting humans, often causing painful welts on the skin.

Asian Tiger Mosquito

Originating from Southeast Asia, the Asian tiger mosquito is now found throughout the eastern, Midwestern and southern states. This mosquito species can cause an irritable bite and spread several diseases, including Dengue fever, West Nile virus and Japanese Encephalitis.

The most effective way to prevent contact with Asian tiger mosquitoes is to eliminate areas of standing water around the home such as baby pools, flowerpots and birdbaths. Homeowners should also screen all windows and doors. Those who spend time outdoors should wear long pants and sleeves, and use an insect repellent containing 20 percent DEET.

Home Mosquito Yard Treatment

With West Nile reports increasing every single year, mosquito protection simply can’t be taken lightly anymore. Protect yourself, your family, and friends each time you go outside. In addition to using DEET sprays on your person, look into getting a home mosquito yard treatment. It’s not as expensive as you’d think and it will provide noticeable relief as you enjoy your time outdoors this year. Rose Pest Solutions proudly offers two options for mosquito control:

  • One time yard treatments for graduation parties, weddings, and other outdoor events
  • Routine home mosquito yard treatments every 3 weeks to keep populations at bay

Brown Marmorated Stink Bug

Likely introduced from Eastern Asia, stink bugs are most prevalent in the northeast. While stink bugs don’t pose any health threats, they can produce an unpleasant odor when crushed.

What kind of damage do stink bugs cause?

While noted as an occasional pest of crops in Asia, in 2009 reports have been made from growers in the middle Atlantic region who sustained significant losses to peaches, pears and apples to stink bugs. The next year was even worse, with regional losses to apples alone exceeding $37 million. Over the past few years, damaging numbers of stink bugs have been seen in soybean fields across the region. In 2010, record numbers of stink bugs were reported in fields of sweet corn. By plunging their sturdy beaks through the corn husk, they remove the nutritious contents of developing kernels. In some cases, so many kernels were damaged that the ear of corn failed to fill out.

Formosan Termite

Originally from China, Formosan termites are the most aggressive subterranean termite species. They are capable of consuming wood at rapid speeds, posing a serious structural threat to a property if left untreated.

Formosans are organized into huge underground colonies, and build intricate mud nests inside the walls of a structure. Because of their aggressive nature, formosan termites are difficult to control once they infest a structure. Prevention is key. If dealing with an existing infestation, talk to a pest professional about formosan termite treatment.

“Due to the health and property risks posed by invasive species, homeowners should frequently inspect the home for signs of an infestation and contact a licensed pest professional to treat any potential pest problems,” added Smith.
