Spring is just around the corner. Finally! It might not feel like it but if you look hard enough you may even find some crocus flowers starting to bud. Guess what else is stirring this time of season? Termites! It’s Termite Awareness Week and Rose Pest Solutions has the termite facts you need to stay termite free.

There is no better time than spring to get rid of unnecessary clutter. There’s just something great about having a clean house in time for open-window season. While most people will find themselves preoccupied with lawn work and cleaning their clutter they may be completely unaware of thousands of destructive pests lurking in their walls. Do you know when your home last had a termite inspection? If it’s been 5 years or more, schedule one with a pro at Rose today!

Northfield, Illinois-Rose Pest Solutions and the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) worked together for Termite Awareness Week to create a list of things that may be going wrong in terms of keeping termites off your property.

“Termites often cause damage completely behind-the-scenes without anyone knowing until it’s too late. In fact, according to the NPMA, termite infestations cause more than $5 billion in property damage each year-an expense typically not covered by homeowners’ insurance policies. ” said Janelle Iaccino at Rose Pest Solutions. “homeowners should work to make their home and property less attractive to these wood-destroying pests before spring hits and colonies are out in full force.”

Preventive Steps for Keeping Termites Away

  1. Storing firewood too close to property: Many homeowners keep firewood stacked against their home or on the stoop for easy access. This is appealing to termites and can draw them towards a home and provide a point of entry. Instead, store firewood at least 20 feet away from the house and five inches off the ground. Also, be careful of leaving stumps and dead trees in the yard. Rotting wood material can serve as termite fuel and eventually result in termites entering the home.
  2. Clogged gutters: Cleaning the gutters is a necessary part of termite prevention. Termites love moisture and clogged gutters can cause water to pool and make insulation vulnerable to these wood-destroying pests.
  3. Mulch: Mulch is frequently used new the home and against the foundation and can serve as a source of food for termites. It also retains moisture, which attracts these destructing pests. Minimize the usage of wood mulch and keep it at least 15 inches from the foundation.
