Talk Mosquitoes with Dr. Stan
Because mosquito season is well underway in Northern Illinois, Rose’s staff entomologist and culicidologist, Dr. Stan E. Cope, will be onsite Saturday to answer questions directly about mosquito control, personal protection, and backyard mosquito management.
Mosquitoes are more than just a nuisance. As a public health pest, they can spread disease, which makes prevention especially important during the summer months. Dr. Stan will be helping visitors separate proven mosquito protection from common myths and gimmicks.
What Actually Works Against Mosquitoes?
Store shelves are full of products claiming to keep mosquitoes away, but not all of them are backed by science. According to Dr. Cope, EPA-approved active ingredients like DEET, Picaridin, and oil of Lemon Eucalyptus remain the most effective personal protection options, including TSA-safe wipes for travel to mosquito-prone destinations. Many DIY remedies, including sonic repellents, mosquito wristbands, novelty traps, and other gadgets, simply do not have strong scientific support to be effective in controlling or repelling mosquitoes.
Natural solutions can also be misunderstood. Plants like citronella, lavender, and mint may smell pleasant, but they will not effectively repel mosquitoes throughout your yard. Essential oil yard sprays may sound appealing, but they generally are not strong or long-lasting enough to provide reliable mosquito control. Many times, they can cause more damage due to misuse.

Reduce Mosquito Breeding Around Your Yard
One of the most effective ways to reduce mosquito activity is by eliminating breeding sites around your property. Mosquitoes can develop in surprisingly small amounts of standing water. Even a bottle cap of water can support mosquito development in the right conditions. Cleaning gutters, emptying outdoor containers, refreshing birdbaths, and improving drainage can all help reduce mosquito populations.
For homeowners looking for garden-friendly mosquito solutions in Rockford, Rose Pest Solutions offers targeted mosquito management designed with families, pets, and pollinator-conscious landscapes in mind.
