German Cockroach
Our remedy for German Cockroach control in Chicagoland, the Greater Rockford region and Southern Wisconsin
First, contact us. Cockroaches pose serious health risks to your family or business. Controlling German cockroaches takes expertise and persistence due to their rapid reproductive rate. At least 95% of the populations must be eliminated during initial treatment or they will return. Baits are a particularly effective form of roach control for this species, but correct placement in cracks and crevices near harborages is critical.
How to Identify a German Cockroach
Appearance
German cockroaches are about 1/2-inch in size and a light brown color all over. They have two long antennae and six long, spiny legs for running. Adult German cockroaches have wings, but they can’t fly. They have two dark lines on their pronotum, a shield-like body part that partially covers their head. Adult cockroaches have two sensory organs on their back end called cerci. These sensitive organs are what allow them to quickly scurry away from danger (they can even sense tiny differences in airflow). German cockroaches do not go through full metamorphosis (like a butterfly does), so immature cockroaches (called nymphs) look like smaller, wingless versions of adults. Immature German cockroaches are teeny tiny and dark brown. These cockroaches are often found in groups of both adults and nymphs.
Habitat
German cockroaches are found throughout structures but prefer warm and humid places. Roach control should focus on bathrooms and the kitchen, two places frequented by this pest. It spends about 80% of its time resting in cracks and voids near a source of food and/or water. These cockroaches most commonly enter buildings via paper products or packaging such as grocery bags, cardboard boxes and drink cartons.
Diet
Scavenger; eats almost anything, including such things as soap, glue and toothpaste.

German Cockroach FAQ
What Foods Attract German Cockroaches?
German cockroaches are highly adaptable scavengers that can survive on a wide range of food sources. Crumbs, grease, pet food, garbage, and spilled beverages are among their favorites, but they can also feed on items such as soap residue, toothpaste, paper products, and adhesives. Eliminating accessible food and moisture sources can help make your home less attractive to cockroaches.
Do German Cockroaches Have Wings?
Yes. Adult German cockroaches have wings that cover most of their bodies. However, they rarely fly and are much more likely to run quickly when disturbed. Their ability to move rapidly and hide in small spaces helps them avoid detection indoors.
How Do German Cockroaches Get Into Homes?
German cockroaches are often introduced accidentally through cardboard boxes, grocery bags, food deliveries, used appliances, and secondhand furniture. In apartment buildings and other multi-unit properties, they can also spread between units through wall voids, plumbing penetrations, and shared utility spaces.
Are German Cockroach Bites Common?
German cockroach bites are rare and typically occur only in severe infestations where food sources are limited. While bites are uncommon, cockroaches should never be ignored because of the health concerns associated with infestations.
Can German Cockroaches Affect Indoor Air Quality?
Cockroach allergens can accumulate indoors through droppings, shed skins, saliva, and egg casings. These allergens may contribute to allergy symptoms and asthma flare-ups, particularly in children and sensitive individuals. Reducing cockroach activity can help create a healthier indoor environment.
Why Are German Cockroaches Considered a Public Health Pest?
German cockroaches can pick up bacteria and other contaminants as they travel through drains, garbage areas, and other unsanitary locations. They may then transfer those contaminants onto food preparation surfaces, dishes, and stored food. This is one reason professional cockroach management is important for homes and businesses alike.
What Can Homeowners Do to Prevent German Cockroaches?
Good sanitation and moisture control are important first steps in cockroach prevention. Homeowners can help reduce the risk of infestations by:
• Storing food in sealed containers
• Cleaning up spills and crumbs promptly
• Emptying trash regularly
• Fixing plumbing leaks
• Reducing clutter in kitchens and storage areas
• Sealing gaps and cracks around the structure
Routine pest management services can provide an additional layer of protection.
Why Are German Cockroaches Found in Kitchens and Bathrooms?
German cockroaches seek out areas that provide food, moisture, and shelter. Kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, utility spaces, and breakrooms often offer ideal conditions for these pests to survive and reproduce.
What Are the Signs of a German Cockroach Problem?
They often remain hidden during the day, so homeowners may not notice an infestation right away. Common warning signs include:
• Live cockroaches, especially after dark
• Small dark droppings near cabinets or appliances
• Egg capsules hidden in cracks and crevices
• A persistent musty odor
• Shed skins in areas of activity
Prompt action can help prevent populations from growing larger.
