Midge

The midge is a type of gnat or small fly that does not bite. They are a close relative of the mosquito, but they don’t have the same mouthparts as mosquitos. When midges swarm, they dance in clusters, which is a mating ritual. The adult midge only lives about 3-5 days. So, unfortunately there isn’t really a product-driven solution to get rid of these small flies. However, getting rid of midges is possible by figuring out the source, because the source (some kind of water) is where they breed.

Midges often swarm with gloomy, wet weather triggers. Springtime is a very common time to see swarms. They’ll congregate around windows, often attracted to light. One thing homeowners can try is replace any outdoor lighting with LED bulbs. These may be less attractive to these flying insects.

Other Facts about Midges

When female midges lay their eggs on the surface of standing water, they sink to the bottom. One of those gooey egg sacs can contain up to a thousand more midges waiting to hatch out. The larva bury themselves in mud at the bottom of the water. In natural aquatic environments, midge larva are a very reliable food source for dragonflies, birds, and many bottom-feeding fish like catfish, carp, etc. They appear red in color and are often called bloodworms due to the hemoglobin in their blood.

What you can do

Changing up your lighting could make a huge difference. LED lights will be less attractive to insects in general. Flood lights will definitely attract a ton of insects. Try to use subdued pathway or landscaping lights. In some scenarios, you could utilize a flood light far away from your home to make them all go near that light instead of your house.

Make sure your windows and screens don’t have gaps, holes or improperly sealed frames. At night, draw your shades closed so interior lights don’t beckon these flying insects towards you.

Also, eliminate standing water at all costs. Stagnant water is what female midges prefer to lay their eggs in. So without moisture, the eggs and larva cannot survive.

“…and concluded without a doubt that my son’s room is bedbug-free”

Mike was extremely professional, thorough and friendly! He made sure to inspect all areas where bedbugs might be…and concluded without a doubt that my son’s room is bedbug-free.

He also provided his diagnosis on what might have been “biting” my son and believes it is dust mites. He recommended a cleaning course of action to address.
