Earwig Control in Chicagoland, the Greater Rockford Region and Southern Wisconsin
Earwigs Around Your Home?
Earwigs are common nuisance pests throughout Chicagoland, the Greater Rockford region and Southern Wisconsin. These insects are most active during warm, humid weather and often gather around foundations, mulch beds, landscaping, patios, and other damp areas around homes.
Although earwigs do not damage structures or pose significant health risks, large populations can become a nuisance when they migrate indoors searching for food, moisture and shelter. Homeowners often find them in basements, bathrooms, laundry rooms, garages, and other damp spaces.
How to Identify Earwigs
Earwigs are easy to recognize thanks to the pair of pincers that look like forceps located at the end of their abdomen (back end). These pincers, called cerci, are one of the insect’s most distinctive features.
Appearance
Adult earwigs typically:
- Measure between ½ and 1 inch long
- Have flattened, elongated bodies
- Range from reddish-brown to dark brown in color
- Long antennae
- Have six legs
- Feature prominent pincers at the rear of the body
Male earwigs generally have larger, more curved pincers than females. While many species have wings, earwigs rarely fly and usually travel by crawling.
What Are Earwig Pincers Used For?
Despite their intimidating appearance, earwig pincers are primarily used for defense, capturing small prey, and courtship. They are not designed to harm people. Earwigs only use them in defense when they’re extremely threatened.
Do Earwigs Crawl Into People’s Ears?
This long-standing myth has contributed to the insect’s name, but there is no scientific evidence that earwigs intentionally crawl into human ears. Earwigs prefer dark, tight, moist hiding places and generally avoid contact with people whenever possible.

FAQs About Earwigs in the Midwest
Where Do Earwigs Live?
Earwigs thrive in environments that provide moisture, shelter, and access to food.
Outdoor Habitat
Around homes in Illinois and Wisconsin, earwigs commonly hide:
- Under mulch
- Beneath stones and landscape timbers
- In flower beds, gardens, flower pots, and plant foilage
- Under firewood piles
- Within leaf litter
- Near compost piles
- Around foundation plantings
During the day, earwigs remain hidden in these tight and confined locations to avoid sunlight and drying out.
Indoor Habitat
When earwigs move indoors, they are most often found in concealed areas with higher moisture levels, including:
- Basements
- Crawl spaces
- Bathrooms
- Laundry rooms
- Garages
- Utility rooms
Unlike some household pests, earwigs typically do not establish large breeding populations indoors. Their presence usually indicates favorable conditions around the exterior of the home.
What Do Earwigs Eat?
Earwigs are opportunistic omnivores with a varied diet.
Common food sources include:
- Decaying plant material and fallen leaves
- Seedlings
- Flowers
- Fruits and vegetables
- Algae and fungi
- Small insects
- Insect eggs
In gardens, earwigs can occasionally damage tender plants, seedlings, lettuce, strawberries, and other fruits and vegetables. However, they can also provide some benefit by feeding on aphids and other small insects.
Why Do I Have Earwigs Around My Home?
Several conditions can attract earwigs to residential properties throughout Chicagoland, the Greater Rockford region and Southern Wisconsin.
- Excess Moisture – Earwigs require moisture to survive. Poor drainage, overwatering, and leaking outdoor fixtures can create ideal conditions.
- Thick Mulch Beds – Mulch retains moisture and provides excellent shelter for earwigs during the day.
- Dense Landscaping – Heavy vegetation around foundations creates shaded, humid environments where earwigs thrive.
- Leaf Litter and Yard Debris – Accumulated organic matter provides both food and hiding places.
- Foundation Gaps and Tight Entry Points – Small, tight cracks around doors, windows, utility penetrations, and foundations provide concealed conditions that entices earwigs to enter homes.
- Weather Changes – Heavy rainfall, flooding, or drought conditions may force earwigs to seek new shelter indoors.
Are Earwigs Dangerous?
Do Earwigs Bite?
No. Earwigs do not bite people.
Can Earwigs Pinch?
Earwigs can use their pincers defensively if handled or caught against skin, but pinches are uncommon and typically cause little more than mild discomfort.
Do Earwigs Damage Homes?
No. Earwigs do not burrow or chew through wood, damage structures, or tunnel through building materials.
Are Earwigs Harmful to Pets?
Earwigs are not considered harmful to dogs, cats, or other household pets.
Can Earwigs Damage Plants?
In large numbers, earwigs may feed on flowers, fruits, vegetables, and tender seedlings. Gardeners often notice damage to soft plant tissue during periods of high earwig activity.
How to Help Prevent Earwigs Around Your Property
Homeowners can take several steps to make their property less attractive to earwigs.
- Reduce Excess Moisture – Address drainage issues, repair leaking faucets, and avoid overwatering landscaping.
- Remove Outdoor Harborage – Clear away leaf litter, grass clippings, wood piles, and other debris near the home.
- Use Mulch Carefully – Keep mulch from directly contacting the foundation and avoid excessive buildup.
- Trim Vegetation – Make sure foliage is away from foundations and structures of your home. Prune shrubs, bushes, and ground cover that create dense, shaded conditions around the home.
- Seal Entry Points – Inspect doors, windows, foundations, and utility openings for gaps that may allow pests indoors.
- Improve Ventilation – Reduce moisture in crawl spaces, basements, and other damp areas whenever possible by using a dehumidifier.
