Pillbug

aka roly-poly bug, woodlouse or sowbug

If you notice a huge amount of pillbugs, also known as roly poly bugs, contact us. A large population of these could indicate that there is a moisture issue somewhere. Pillbug control may involve structural corrections.

Pillbugs are nocturnal isopods. Think of them like terrestrial crustaceans (like a tiny lobster that lives in soil). They’re great for gardens and do an awesome job of eating decaying plant matter. But if you have them indoors, something might be wrong.

How to Identify a pillbug

Appearance

Dark brownish-gray in color, pillbugs have a dozen or so segments that allow them to curl up into a ball as a defense mechanism. They’re about 1/4-1/2″ in length.

Habitat

Roly poly bugs, or pillbugs, like humid, damp, undisturbed areas in soil. They’ll hang out in areas that have rotting wood, fallen leaves, rocks, logs, etc.

Diet

Decaying plants and decomposing organic matter are the pillbug’s favorite foods. So they’re totally great if you find them in your garden. If they’re in your house, they could be feeding on rotting wood caused by water damage.

Pillbug control

Correcting a water flow or leak issue or rotting wood presence near the foundation of your home could push pillbug populations back into nature where they belong.

Highly recommended

“Sean was informative, on time, communicated clearly and understandably, listened attentively, put everything back he moved during the treatment and was polite. In the Fall I have used Rose Pest Solutions for about 7 years annually to keep insects from coming into my home for their over Winter residence. Highly recommended.”
